Polycystic Kidney Disease

PKD

Polycystic Kidney Disease(PKD) is a kind of genetic disease which is characterized with numerous fluid-filled sacs of different sizes in the kidneys. Generally, the cysts can enlarge with the age and then damage renal structure and function. If not treated effectively, it will improve to End Stage Renal Disease(ESRD).

Types of PKD

According to its mode of inheritance, Polycystic Kidney Disease can be divided into ADPKD(autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease) and ARPKD(autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease).

ADPKD --- it makes up about 90% and often happens during the age of 30 to 50. Among the patients over 60 years old, 50% of them will develop in to End Stage Renal Disease, which accounts for five to ten percent of the causes of ESRD. If either of the parents have this disease, each of their children can have 50% possibility to be attacked.

ARPKD --- this is less common and often occur soon after the birth and the earlier, the severer. In general, if both of the parents have this disease, the onset rate of their children is 25%. While, the children will not be attacked if only one of their parents has this disease.

Causes

Most of patients with this disease are diagnosed with family history. However, some other patients may not be attacked through inheritance. And in usual, this may result from heritable variation or gene mutation.

Diagnosis

In clinical, PKD are mainly diagnosed on the basis of the symptoms, family history and some imaging examinations such as CT and MRI.

Complications

Polycystic liver and brain aneurysm are the common complications of PKD, besides, it can lead to cysts in spleen, pancreas, ovary and so on.

PKD-Symptoms

The clinical symptoms of PKD depends on the sizes of cysts, the oppressed degree of renal tissues and wether there’re complications. In general, the main clinical symptoms are as follows.

Pain

Back pain and abdomen pain are the the most common symptoms of PKD patients. And patients will feel more painful as the cysts enlarge. Acute pain is often an indication of cyst rupture, urinary tract obstruction caused by stone or blood clots, or infection. While, chronic pain usually because the cysts are enlarging and stretching the renal capsule and renal pedicle, and then the neighboring organs are oppressed.

Hematuria (blood in urine)

About 90% of patients with this disease suffer from blood in urine, the causes of which are rupture of cysts, stone or infection. And the hematuria often appears after strenuous exercise or wound. Normally, blood in urine can disappear naturally after two to seven days.

High blood pressure

It is a common symptoms of PKD patients in the early time. This is the renal tissues are oppressed by the enlarging cysts. As a result, the kidneys will be in a state of ischemia and anoxia, thus it can lead to high blood pressure.

Renal damage

Most patients can maintain their normal kidney function during the 40 to 60 years when the cysts begin enlarge. However, once their renal function decreases, their GFR will go down at the speed of 4.4~5.5 ml/min. And it takes about ten years from renal damage to ESRD.

Abdominal mass

When the cysts grow to a certain size, patients can feel some bossing in the upper abdomen.

Renal stone

It holds about 10% and manifests with renal colic.

Anemia

This symptom often relates to the decrease of kidney function.

Others

Other symptoms may include frequent urine, fatigue, headache and hearing loss, etc.

The above is about the clinical symptoms of PKD. And if you suffer from one or more of these, please consult our live doctor and we are ready to help you.

PKD treatment

In western medicine, patients often choose a surgery or dialysis to treat PKD. While in China, they choose Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy to treat this disease. Now let’s make a comparison about their advantages and disadvantages.

Surgery

Many patients choose a surgery to shrink the cysts. The most common way are renal cyst decortication and paracentesis.

-Advantages: it can shrink the large cysts rapidly and alleviate the symptoms of PKD.

-Disadvantages: the smaller cysts can not be controlled. And with the disappearance of large cysts, there will be a comfortable environment for the small cysts to grow. So it is easy to relapse.

Dialysis

If the PKD develops into the end stage, many patients may choose dialysis to maintain their kidney function.

-Advantages: these methods can help alleviate the clinical symptoms and prolong patients’ lifespan.

-Disadvantages: dialysis must be done regularly, otherwise, it the kidney disease will be worse.

Micro-Chinese Medicine Osmotherapy

This therapy depends on traditional Chinese herbal medicine, and with the help of osmosis device, the active substances can reach renal lesions directly to prevent the cystic epithelial cells from secreting cystic fluid. In this case, we can efficiently restrain the regrowth of cyst. Then by promoting blood circulation and increasing permeability of cystic wall, the pressure difference between internal and external of kidneys can be changed, thus the fluid in the cysts will flow out and excrete along with urine

-Advantages: it can treat PKD from the root cause. And the active substances of Micro-Chinese medicine can provide some substances like vitamins, trace element, organic acid and so on to help repair kidney damage. In addition, the whole process is done on the external of kidneys, so it is very safe , comfortable and without side effect.

-Disadvantages: because it takes effect through Chinese herbs, the treatment period may be a little longer.

The above is some treatment options of PKD, you can choose a proper one according to your own condition. Also, you can take the advice from our live doctor.

PKD healthy living

PKD is a kind of congenital genetic disease that is difficult to treat. But if detected and treated as early as possible, the disease can be controlled successfully.
